The Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), founded in 2000, is a multi-discipline state-owned research center – the largest in Northern Greece and one of the largest in the country.

CERTH has important scientific and technological achievements in many areas including: Information & Communication, Energy, Environment, Industry, Mechatronics, Transportation & Sustainable Mobility, Health, Agro-biotechnology, Smart farming, Safety & Security, as well as several cross-disciplinary scientific areas. Today CERTH includes the following five institutes with indicated major fields of research: (a) Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI), (b) Information Technologies Institute (ITI), (c) Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT), (d) Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB), (e) Institute for Bio-Economy and Agri-Technology (IBO). CERTH’s institute participating in this project is the Information Technologies Institute (ITI). CERTH has received numerous awards and distinctions such as the European Descartes Prize, a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant, Microsoft International Contest Prize, a Trading Agents Competition Award and many more and is listed among the Top-20 of the EU’s Research Centres with the highest participation in HORIZON 2020 competitive research grants.

Role

The CERTH-ITI participating team, namely the research group led by Dr. Mezaris, has significant experience and scientific expertise on the technical aspects of the MIRROR project, namely the development of methods for image, video and multimedia content analysis and understanding, and the development of new machine learning and deep learning algorithms for enabling such analysis and understanding.

CERTH leads the “Multimedia analysis methods” work package (WP5), where they develop deep learning architectures for multimedia analysis. Furthermore, CERTH is involved in WP4 and WP6 for ensuring the proper linking between text, multimedia and social network analysis methods. CERTH is also involved in WP7 for the integration of its technologies in the MIRROR platform; and in WP1 for quality plan development, progress monitoring and project management, with Dr. Mezaris serving as MIRROR’s Research Manager. CERTH also contributes to WP10 on pilot testing and evaluation, and to WP11 for the scientific dissemination and exploitation of its research results.
