L3S Research Centre is a joint research institute of several universities in Lower Saxony, Germany formally associated with Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH). Work at L3S focuses on excellent AI-based research and the development of innovative and cutting-edge methods and technologies for systems, which are intelligent (characterized by learning processes that allow the acquisition of new skills and deal with a large amount of heterogeneous, uncertain and probabilistic data), reliable (ensuring the reliability of the ever more complex networked and autonomous intelligent systems) and responsible (both reflecting social needs and explore and assess possible effects on personal freedom of development, democratic principles and social interaction). The L3S team builds upon approaches from various areas such as social media analysis, information retrieval, machine learning, natural language processing, semantic web technologies, as well as privacy/security related legal issues and sociology. The institute’s research has achieved high recognition both in Germany and abroad.

Role

Within MIRROR, the partner LUH has the role of the coordinator of the project. As the coordinator, LUH leads WP1 (Project Management) as well as, from the administrative site, WP2 (Demand Analysis & Forecasting for Border control Units and Policymakers), which is strongly driven by the border agencies as application partners. Other work packages led by LUH include WP6 (Cross-Media Network Analysis Methods) and WP12 (Ethics requirements).

Furthermore, LUH brings in its expertise in social media analysis, social network analysis and text analysis for performing tasks in WP6 and WP4 (Text Analysis Methods for Social and Traditional Media). LUH is also involved in WP7 for the integration of its technologies in the MIRROR platform, and in WP11 for the scientific dissemination and exploitation of its research results.
